The basics

What is a NIF number in Portugal?

NIF stands for Número de Identificação Fiscal — Portugal's personal tax identification number. It is a 9-digit number issued by the Portuguese Tax and Customs Authority (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira), which most people simply call Finanças. Every tax matter you have in Portugal is linked to it.

The NIF is not only for paying tax. Landlords, banks, utility companies, schools and employers all ask for it, so in practice it is one of the very first things anyone moving to Portugal — or managing property or investments there — needs to sort out. Many visa applicants get it before they even book a consulate appointment, because a Portuguese lease or bank account is part of their file.

Getting one is not complicated, but it does involve the tax office, an address for official letters and, for most non-EU citizens, a fiscal representative. That is where our team comes in: we take care of the request end to end so the number is ready when you need it.

Why you need it

What you need a Portuguese tax number for

Without a NIF, many everyday steps of a move to Portugal simply cannot go ahead.

Renting or buying a home

Lease contracts and property purchases are registered against the NIF of the tenant or buyer.

Opening a bank account

Portuguese banks ask for your NIF before they will open a personal account in your name.

Setting up utilities

Electricity, water and internet contracts are all opened using your tax number.

Enrolling in school or university

Schools and universities use the NIF when registering students and issuing invoices.

Working or freelancing

You need a NIF to start a business, register as self-employed or be paid as a freelancer.

Becoming a tax resident

Your NIF is the record Finanças uses once you move your tax residence to Portugal.

Requirements

Requirements to get a NIF number

The list is short, but each item has to be right for the tax office to accept the request.

  • A valid passport or ID card

Your identity document must be current on the day the request is made.

  • Registration with the Tax Authority

The NIF is issued by the Autoridade Tributária, so you are entered into its system as a taxpayer.

  • A residential address

This can be in Portugal or abroad. It is where official correspondence and tax letters are sent.

  • A fiscal representative (non-EU residents)

If you live outside the EU, a Portuguese tax representative receives official notifications for you.

  • A reason for the request

Finanças often asks why you need a NIF — for example to rent a home, open a bank account or start work.

  • Filing with Finanças

The request is submitted to the tax office either by you in person or by an authorised representative.

Portugal questions

NIF number: questions answered

Get answers to common questions about visa applications, requirements, and processes.

What is a NIF number in Portugal?
It is the Número de Identificação Fiscal, a 9-digit tax identification number issued by the Portuguese Tax Authority (Finanças). It identifies you for every tax matter and is requested by banks, landlords, utility providers, schools and employers.
Can I get a NIF without being in Portugal?
Yes. The request can be filed with Finanças by an authorised representative, so you do not have to visit a tax office yourself. That is how most of our clients get their NIF before they arrive.
Do non-EU citizens need a fiscal representative?
If you live outside the EU, you generally need a Portuguese tax representative to receive official notifications on your behalf. We check whether this applies to you and arrange it as part of the service when it does.
Do I need a NIF before applying for a Portuguese visa?
In practice, usually yes. A lease, a property purchase or a Portuguese bank account — all common parts of a visa file — require a NIF, so it is normally one of the first steps of the move.
What address do I give when applying?
You can use your current address abroad or an address in Portugal. It is where official correspondence is sent, so once you move to Portugal you should update it with Finanças.
Is the NIF the same as the NISS?
No. The NIF is your tax number from Finanças, while the NISS is your Social Security number from the Instituto da Segurança Social. In most cases you need the NIF first, and we can help with both.
